Ä¢¹½´«Ã½ President Mark Lombardi, PhD, recently met with Chronicle of Higher Education staff to discuss the institution\u2019s innovative technology and active learning ecosystem and how these efforts have driven Ä¢¹½´«Ã½\u2019s enrollment growth. Lombardi emphasized the central role that Ä¢¹½´«Ã½\u2019s innovative faculty members have played in this revolution. He also discussed the impact of an active learning ecosystem in the classroom.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat happens in the classroom is we’ve got our students and our faculty engaged in this vibrant learning process, where the students own it,\u201d Lombardi said. \u201cThey’re involved, they’re engaged, they actually are a part of creating that content.\u201d<\/p>\n

The focus on revolutionizing higher education has drawn national attention to Ä¢¹½´«Ã½\u2014and a record number of students, Lombardi told the Chronicle.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur enrollment this past year for first-year students was a 45 percent increase over the previous year for freshmen,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd in surveying incoming freshmen and parents, they identified personalized learning, the Digital World<\/a> initiative, and our life-coaching<\/a> initiative where our learning diagnostics happen, as the key factors in why they chose to come in Ä¢¹½´«Ã½.\u201d<\/p>\n

The interview also covered Ä¢¹½´«Ã½\u2019s shift from traditional advising to a life coach model, investment in faculty professional development \u2014 especially in technology training \u2014 and student success related to academics and retention.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo as we’ve gone forward and assessed \u2014 and again, we’re not done yet by any measure \u2014 but as we’ve assessed, we’re seeing improved learning outcomes \u2026 in terms of not just grades but faculty evaluation of student ability,\u201d Lombardi said.<\/p>\n
